What an air source heat pump actually is
An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a refrigeration cycle in reverse. A fan pulls outside air across a coil filled with refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat (yes, even from cold Scottish air down to about –15°C), is compressed to raise its temperature, and the heat is transferred via a heat exchanger to your central heating water. Output water typically runs at 35–55°C, lower than a gas boiler’s 70–80°C, which means a different design philosophy is required throughout the whole heating system.
Step 1 — The home survey
Every quality air source heat pump installation begins with a thorough home survey. Boxergy’s survey covers:

This survey is the single most important hour in the whole project. It determines the size of pump you need, the radiators that may need upgrading, and the ultimate running cost.
Step 2 — System design
From the survey data, the installer designs the system. A correctly designed air source heat pump installation in Scotland will deliver a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCoP) of 3.5–4.2 , meaning every 1 kWh of electricity in produces 3.5–4.2 kWh of heat out. That’s how heat pumps make economic sense even when electricity costs more per kWh than gas.
Key design choices:
- Pump size: Most Scottish 3–4 bed homes need 6–8 kW. Oversizing is the most common mistake. It leads to cycling and poor SCoP.
- Flow temperature: Lower is better. Aim for 45°C or lower at design conditions.
- Radiator upgrades: Some radiators may need to be larger. This is normal.
- Hot water cylinder: A vented cylinder will usually be replaced with a 200–250L unvented heat pump cylinder.
- Buffer tank or volumiser: Often optional, depending on system design and pump model.
Step 3 — Grants and paperwork

- Weather compensation curve set to your home’s heat loss
- Hot water schedule programmed for off-peak tariffs

- Bad outdoor siting. Tucked in a noisy corner, behind a fence, or where snow piles up — all common mistakes. The unit needs airflow and 1m of clear space.
- No commissioning data. If your installer can’t show you the weather compensation curve and the post-installation flow temperatures, the system is not commissioned.
