CEO reflections: Are Electric Cars Cheaper to Run

Are electric cars cheaper to run?
The question of whether electric cars are cheaper to run has been a longstanding debate. Historically, the allure of lower running costs through factors such as cheap charging, tax breaks, and government subsidies has been a key driver for the switch to electric vehicles (EVs). There’s little doubt that electric cars will transform the car industry and will begin to dominate our roads in years to come.
Changes in Energy Landscape and Government Policies:
Since mid-2022, an energy crisis has led to a significant increase in electricity prices, challenging the previously perceived economic advantage of EVs. Additionally, road tax (VED) for EVs has seen an increase, and grants for transitioning to EVs have been eliminated. While some automakers, like Tesla, have reduced their EV prices, the overall shift in running costs remains uncertain.
Infrastructure and Regional Variances:
The accessibility of EV running costs may depend on the infrastructure for EV driving in your area. With various factors at play, such as charging station availability and pricing, the decision to switch to an EV requires careful consideration of the local environment.
Home EV Chargers Installed by Boxergy:
Home EV chargers offer unparalleled convenience, allowing you to charge your electric vehicle in the comfort of your own space, eliminating the need for visits to public charging stations and saving time in your daily routine. In terms of cost savings, home charging is generally more affordable than using public stations, especially when taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates, contributing significantly to the overall affordability of owning and operating an electric vehicle. The flexibility and freedom provided by home EV chargers allow you to charge your vehicle according to your schedule, ensuring it’s always ready for your next journey and eliminating concerns about finding available public charging infrastructure. Additionally, home chargers often provide faster charging speeds than standard public stations, allowing for quicker top-ups and greater flexibility in daily activities without extended waiting times. With customisation and control features, home chargers enable you to tailor the charging experience to your preferences, monitor and control the process, set schedules for optimal electricity rates, and integrate smart features for a more efficient and personalised EV charging experience.
Are electric cars cheaper to run? Comparison with Fossil Fuel Cars:
To provide a comprehensive understanding, it’s essential to compare EV running costs with those of traditional petrol and diesel cars. Fossil fuel cars incur multiple charges, including Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) and fees for driving in emission-based zones. These costs contribute to the overall expenses associated with conventional vehicles.
Impact of Energy Crisis on EV Charging Costs:
The cost of charging EVs has undergone changes due to the cost-of-living crisis in 2022. Home charging expenses have increased, and public charging stations, subject to a higher VAT, may now rival or surpass the cost of filling a petrol engine. Rapid chargers, in particular, pose challenges for planning longer EV trips.
Hybrid Cars as an Alternative:
For those seeking a middle ground, hybrid cars offer a compromise. While still relying on fuel, hybrids benefit from an electric motor, extending their range. The availability of a wide range of hybrid models allows consumers to choose based on their driving preferences and efficiency needs.
Evolving Dynamics and Future Considerations:
Despite the current uncertainties, EVs continue to represent a significant portion of new car production. As policies surrounding taxation, subsidies, and charges evolve, the long-term prospects of switching to EVs are likely to become more favourable. However, for those prioritising immediate cost-effectiveness for long-distance driving, petrol or diesel engines with low CO2 emissions remain viable options.
The decision to switch to an electric vehicle involves navigating a complex landscape of changing running costs, government policies, and infrastructure considerations. As the automotive industry rapidly electrifies in anticipation of the 2035 switchover, consumers must weigh the evolving factors to make informed choices regarding their vehicle transition. One thing is clear – the future is green, the future is electric!

We’ve been running an EV since January 2019 and as a retired couple average about 6000 miles per year.
Our current EV averages 4.6 miles per KWH and using off peak home charging that equates to 2 pence per mile.
We achieve about 320 miles on a full charge during the summer months dropping to about 270 miles in winter.
We are investigating the merits of solar panels which would reduce the cost even more
