Boiler Replacement Cost: The Ultimate Guide to Switching to a Heat Pump.

Are you considering replacing your boiler and switching to a heat pump but worried about how it will affect your hot water supply (boiler replacement cost)? Many homeowners face this challenge, especially when converting from a combi boiler system. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore how you can seamlessly integrate a heat pump into your home, manage hot water needs, and decide whether to keep your combi gas boiler.

Space for a Hot Water Tank

One of the primary challenges when converting to a heat pump system is finding space for a hot water tank. Modern homes designed around combi boilers often lack a dedicated airing cupboard or large loft space typically used for hot water storage. However, with careful planning and consultation with an installer, you can often find a suitable location for a compact and efficient hot water tank.

Heat Pump and Hot Water Temperature

Heat pumps can generate hot water efficiently, but there are a few considerations to ensure they meet your needs:

  • Temperature Range: Heat pumps can heat water up to around 50-75°C, depending on the model. We recommend setting it to 55°C, which balances capacity, efficiency, and reduces the risk of scalding. This temperature is generally sufficient for most domestic hot water needs, including cleaning greasy dishes. However, for legionella prevention, it is recommended that water is periodically heated to 60°C. Most heat pumps come with the capability to schedule a “legionella cycle,” where the heat pump raises the temperature to 55°C and then the immersion heater takes over to raise it further.
  • Electric Immersion Heater: To ensure legionella safety and achieve higher temperatures when necessary, many heat pump systems incorporate an electric immersion heater. This heater can boost the water temperature periodically or on demand, ensuring safety and hygiene.

Balancing Heating Needs

Considering your needs, here are a few options:

  • Heat Pump:
    • Advantages: The heat pump provides both space heating and hot water, with the immersion heater ensuring water temperatures are periodically raised to 60°C to prevent legionella. This approach can lead to lower cost hot water, potentially saving over £115 per year on gas standing charges alone.
    • Disadvantages: Slightly higher complexity and potentially increased electricity use due to the immersion heater.
  • Combination with Combi Gas Boiler:
    • Advantages: The heat pump can efficiently handle space heating, while the existing combi gas boiler continues to provide hot water. This method ensures consistent high temperatures for hot water, but it does mean relying on two systems. Keeping your gas supply for this purpose could cost you over £115 per year in standing charges alone.
    • Disadvantages: Maintaining two systems can increase maintenance requirements and complexity.

Boiler Replacement Cost: Recommended Approach

For many households, the easiest and most efficient solution is to switch entirely to a heat pump, especially if you already have renewables on your home and use a smart tariff. This approach simplifies your system and can lead to significant cost savings over time.

Switching to a heat pump for both space heating and hot water is a viable and cost-effective solution for many households. By utilising an electric immersion heater for periodic high-temperature needs, you can ensure safe and efficient hot water generation while minimising reliance on gas and its associated costs.
