The first half of 2024 has witnessed a remarkable surge in heat pump installations across the United Kingdom, according to the latest data from the UK certification body, MCS (heat pump installation 2024). The data reveals not only a significant increase in the number of heat pump installations but also a record-breaking rise in battery storage installations. At this pace, the UK is set to break its annual heat pump installation record by the end of the year.
Heat Pump Installation Surge in 2024
In the first six months of 2024, the UK saw an impressive 27,000 certified heat pump installations. This marks a 45% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge highlights the growing adoption of sustainable heating solutions among UK households, driven by increasing awareness and supportive government policies.
Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS, praised the record numbers, attributing the success to high-quality installations and government support. “It’s fantastic to see record numbers of installations. High-quality installation work and supportive government policies are key to this success,” said Mr Rippin. He emphasised the importance of ongoing government support, citing initiatives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which provides up to £7,500 towards the installation of a heat pump.
Record-Breaking Battery Storage Installations
The MCS data also shows a dramatic increase in battery storage installations. In the first half of 2024, there were 7,900 certified battery storage installations, surpassing the annual record set in 2023. This surge reflects the growing trend of integrating battery storage with renewable energy systems, providing households with greater energy independence and efficiency.
Since the introduction of the UK’s Battery Storage Installation Standard in 2021, the sector has seen substantial growth. The standard covers installations with a maximum power output of up to 50 kW and complements existing MCS certifications for small-scale generation. The first battery installation was recorded in April 2022, with an average of 34 installations per month for the remainder of that year. This number rose significantly in 2023 to around 400 installations per month, totalling 4,970 installations for the year.
Growth in Solar Panel Installations
In addition to heat pumps and battery storage, the UK has seen a notable increase in solar panel installations. More than 80,000 UK homes had certified solar panels installed in the first half of 2024. This growth underscores the broader trend of households investing in renewable energy technologies.
Government Support and Future Outlook
Supportive government policies have played a crucial role in driving the adoption of heat pumps and other renewable technologies. The recently published Heat Strategy for Wales, for instance, highlights a clear commitment to heat pumps.
