New builds are the easiest case. With lower heat demand and underfloor heating, SCOP values tend to be higher, sometimes above 3.5. That pushes electricity consumption even lower, improving running costs and comfort.

Ground Source Heat Pumps for Larger Plots

Ground source heat pumps work on the same principle as air source systems but draw heat from the ground, where temperatures are more stable.

They often achieve SCOP values of 4.0 or higher, which changes the maths significantly.

Worked example: detached home

Heat demand: 14,000 kWh per year

Electricity needed at SCOP 4.0:
14,000 ÷ 4.0 = 3,500 kWh

The limitation here is not efficiency but space. Ground loops usually require gardens or land, making this option more realistic for detached homes on the outskirts of Glasgow.

Solar thermal panels are simpler than solar PV. They heat water directly rather than producing electricity.
