The Energy Crisis and Its Impact
The soaring cost of household energy has created a stark reality where some people are forced to choose between heating and eating. With the consumer price cap rising by 54% in April 2022 and potentially higher increases looming for Winter 2022, the situation is dire.
The Need for Change
Our current electricity market and networks are in desperate need of redesign. We must create systems that allow consumers and businesses to access the benefits of cheap renewable energy, particularly solar.
Solar: A Key Solution
Solar energy is proving to be a crucial part of the solution:
- It can already produce up to 30% of UK electricity at various points throughout the year.
- In 2021, solar provided over 4% of the UK’s total electricity demand, with potential to triple by 2030.
- When the UK achieves 40GW of solar capacity it is estimated that solar would be 15% of the UK’s annual power demand, as of 2023 this is only 14.4GW.
- The cost of solar panels has declined by -60% since 2010.

The economics of solar have improved dramatically:
- Utility-scale solar costs have plummeted by 88% since 2010.
- Rooftop solar costs have decreased by up to 60% in the same period.
